  • "Now, even those of us who were co-opted there, we didn't really know each other, or - some of us did know about each other... There was that lovely story again: I was walking in front of the Fed when I walked in that entrance. Well, and there were cameramen. I was thinking, 'What's going on?' And he was walking about five meters behind me, Dubček. Well, that was... I thought it was because of me, but it was because of Dubček."

  • "They used to come to Horní Dubenky to see us. And one of them was studying physics, or even nuclear physics, and when we talked about the wiretaps, he said, 'Look, we'll do something.' And he had some device, I don't know, he just connected it to the phone, turned it, and it was quiet, no phones. And after a while, a couple of hours, the postman said, 'They've arrived.' So they put it back together and it was on again. It was a bit of a game, probably not the wisest thing to do, but we felt like heroes."

  • "The doors were open, and there was a tank in front of that church, and he was doing the whole sermon through that main one like that. And I had prepared a sermon about David and Jonathan about friendship, and at that moment, I didn't understand at all why some of the people in that congregation were crying. Somehow, I couldn't put it together at all. I kept watching the barrel. And I remember we sang the national anthem at the end, so that was kind of my greatest experience of those first days of the occupation."

Petr Brodský was born on 6 May 1947 in Karlovy Vary. In 1950, he moved with his family to Jablůnka in Wallachia. In the 1960s, they moved to Vsetín, where Petr joined the Czech Brethren congregation under the pastor Emil Ženatý. After high school, in 1966, he entered the Comenius Evangelical Divinity Faculty in Prague. During his studies, he completed two years of military service and graduated in 1973, when he was put in charge of the congregation in Libštát. In 1975, his state approval was revoked because of the gathering of pastors. After some time, however, his approval was returned, and in 1975, he moved with his family to Hrubá Vrbka, where he was given the position of pastor. In 1977, he signed Charter 77 with Dana Němcová and soon had to change his place of work to Horní Dubenky, where he became friends with Ivan Martin Jirous - Magor and his wife and distributed samizdat literature. In 1985, his state approval was withdrawn again. Petr worked as a stoker for a while and eventually found a job at the train post office, where he worked until 1989. At the end of 1989, he was co-opted to the Federal Assembly. In 1990, ran as a candidate for the Civic Forum. After the 1992 elections, he did not get into the Federal Assembly again and found a job at the Evangelical Theological Faculty, first as director of the seminary and later as secretary of the faculty. Since 2005, the position of preacher in the eastern countries was created for Petr Brodský, and he devoted himself to congregations in the regional communities. In 2023, he was living in Prague.
