The following text is not a historical study. It is a retelling of the witness’s life story based on the memories recorded in the interview. The story was processed by external collaborators of the Memory of Nations. In some cases, the short biography draws on documents made available by the Security Forces Archives, State District Archives, National Archives, or other institutions. These are used merely to complement the witness’s testimony. The referenced pages of such files are saved in the Documents section.

Vladimír Grégr (* 1933)

You have to carry on the family tradition

  • +born April 5th 1933 to the Grégr family +his family ran a printing company in Praha´s Nové Město (The New Town) +his father Eduard Grégr had been the company director, his mother Milada née Mellanová was the daughter of a famous Praha´s lawyer +his uncle Vladimír Grégr, an architect, participated in anti-Nazi resistance and was executed by the Nazis on February 22nd 1943 +after the Second World War, he studied at The King George of Poděbrady Central Bohemian College (Středočeská kolej krále Jiřího z Poděbrad) with Miloš Forman and Václav Havel among his classmates +he graduated from Jan Neruda Gymnasium in Malá Strana, Praha +after February 1948, the printing company had been nationalised, the family had to move to a flat in Belgická street +he had been working at the Energoprojekt company, then at the Orlík Reservoir construction site +he graduated in Construction Economics at Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT) +he was a road construction supervisor at District Investment Enterprise (Krajský investiční podnik) +in 1965, he wanted to emigrate but his plan was marred +in 1968, he emigrated to Switzerland via Austria with his wife Jana +the family settled in Luzern, Switzerland +he had been working at a cantonal office till retirement +after 1989, the family got the printing company building back in a run-down condition +the family had the company building in Hálkova street renovated
