Ján Hollý was born on November 6, 1949, in Martin. He comes from a family of teachers and priests. His father was a protestant priest and his mother a teacher. None of them could pursue their jobs during the communist regime. His father worked as an accountant at JRD and his mother as a worker and later in a hospital. Ján studied at the grammar school in Martin and later got to UPJŠ in Košice. He became a dentist. In 1967, he experienced the arrest of Bishop V. P. Čobrd, who was visiting them. He has been photographing since high school. Later, in Bardejov, he joined the BARDAF photo club at the JAS racing club. He studied photography at the Institute of Fine Art Photography under the guidance of Vladimír Birgus and Antonín Braný. In 1989, he took part in protests in Bardejov, which he documented. In addition, he photographed protests in Prague and Košice. A selection of his photographs from this period can be found in the SNG collection. After 1990, he fell silent as a photographer and devoted himself to his profession. In 2008 he re-joined the renewed BARDAF photo club and is still a member today.
