Jáchym Kaplan was born in Prague on 24 February 1969 into a Roman Catholic dissident family. As a child, he attended secret services and illegal Scout meetings. He knew Charter 77 signatories and co-founded the NMS (Independent Peace Association). He played with underground bands, organised a protest with the NMS on 21 August 1988, and was arrested before the anniversary of Jan Palach’s self-immolation on 19 January 1989. He studied at the Ohradní Street high school. After graduating in 1988, he worked as a guard at the Náprstek Museum and later as a handler at the National Gallery. In the early 1990s, he founded the Black Hand agency and withdrew from public life after quitting. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as a construction labourer in Dublin for Abbey Building Contractor. He then returned to the Czech Republic, bought land in Šumava, built a log cabin and started an eco-farm. In 2017 he married Padma Sonar from Nepal and had two children. He was living with his family in Řepešín near Prachatice in 2024.
