  • "I can't remember now, but I know it was something in a barn, so it was probably something like Skalice - a private event. And I didn't notice it at all, normal, no chaos, nothing, quiet, music quite loud... Then I felt something on my back, I was lying on the ground, then there was chaos around me, screaming. Then someone was pulling my leg, my hair - and I was in the anton. It was very fast. Watch out! Then they added more people. Then they checked our IDs. And I don't know now if anyone was eliminated if they didn't have ID. I don't remember. But I know they checked our IDs, wrote down something... I remember that. And then they took us somewhere far away. They dropped us off about a kilometer apart in the woods."

  • "Well, culture was probably quite important, because when a person found out that he couldn't read what he wanted to read - or that a book came out, I don't know, I'll give you a name: Werich, and it wasn't this wide, but it was censored halfway, and then he had the opportunity to borrow the uncensored version from somewhere by chance, where it wasn't... where it wasn't about politics, but there was a lot more - so he started to have some questions. And as you started to sort of look for books, borrow books, you got some contacts, you learned more, and you actually realized that there was something going on that shouldn't be."

I was knocked to the ground, pulled by my hair and driven far into the woods in an anton

Radek Smažák was born on 31 July 1966 in Chrudim. Since childhood he liked reading and avoided organized groups, which was reflected in his adult life. At the turn of 1986 and 1987 he started publishing the underground magazine SMYKLAC. Together with his friends, he participated in various illegal events and copied books banned by the regime of the time. He was interrogated several times by State Security, which was interested in both the publication of the magazine and his circle of acquaintances. In 1984 he trained as a car mechanic and worked in this field for several years. Later he worked as a heating engineer. In November 1989 he was actively involved in the events of that time - he organised the first demonstrations in Chrudim and was present at the creation of the first declaration of the local Civic Forum. At the time of filming in 2024, he lived in Hrochův Týnec.
