Alena Trachtová was born in Prague on 13 July 1935 to Josef and Maria Sulík. At the end of the war she experienced the bombing of Prague. During the Prague Uprising, she witnessed the murder of her classmate when the SS were expelling pupils from school. Her father worked as a clerk, the whole family belonged to the Sokols and subscribed to the non-communist press. All this was the reason why Alena could not go to study. All her life she worked as a designer, first at Tesla, then at Czech Railways. Alena’s cousin married a war hero, Jaroslav Hajek, who flew for the RAF. After the war he worked for international lines, after February 1948 he was transferred to domestic lines. In 1948, the plane he was piloting was hijacked to West Germany. He returned home, where the regime sentenced him to ten years in prison. His wife failed a nighttime search and miscarried. They were never able to have another child. Alena Trachtová took part in a demonstration in the autumn of 1989. At the time of filming, she lived in Rataj nad Sázavou.
