  • "He made a tricycle with a serial Trabant, it flew on a free wing, it was undersized, but it could withstand everything. So he took the car, drove somewhere near Mikulov at night, had a scythe, cut the grass to make a place to start. He set it up and took off in the dark. He left the car there and flew to Vienna. By the time he was over Vienna, it was already light out, you could see, and he landed at the Vienna airport. They were furious that he was making a mess. He didn't have a radio, he just plugged it in and landed. It was a big deal, it was written about in the West, and a museum bought the hang glider he flew. For about thirty thousand marks, so he had good money to start with and then he fled to America."

  • "A car came, some guys helped move furniture in, and it was furniture that was my mom's. Dad's had been confiscated. So there was a living room and a bedroom and something for the kitchen. Some plates and stuff and blankets. And that was it, that's all that fit on the truck. And then we got in, and off we went."

  • "The State Security officers arrived in a car, wearing leather coats and hats, and they got a note saying they had a search warrant. And they started going through our apartment, opening cupboards, even going into the attic, looking, looking for something, I don't know what. And the interesting thing is that my mother always took a hen, twisted its neck and gave it to them as a bribe, and they left. There was already a shortage of food then, as the comrades transformed it. Even the State Security officers were bribable."
