  • "We avoided them [the Soviets] in a big way. There was nothing to talk about. Only, of course, we told them that it was not true what they were telling us there, that they had liberated us, that they were helping us, but that was all. Because they were so full of it that, anyway, they didn't understand how it was possible that we didn't thank them. That's about the extent of it."

  • "If we went for a walk, we always went in a group, we never went alone, we were not forbidden to do that, but just so that we wouldn't get lost and something would happen to us. We were surprised, for example, in the shops, when we came to the shop, at that time, maybe they had more perfect ones, and here there were not yet, for example, transistors. They took very good care of us, we were in a beautiful hotel, we had excellent food, we were well taken care of. But when we went out on the street, I can tell now, but I was surprised how poorly dressed people were. They had a subway there even then, when I peeked, I wasn't on the subway, I just peeked as people were rushing into the subway - big backpacks, not suitcases, but like big ranchers they were dragging along, so I was a little surprised."

  • "Later on I started to notice what was going on in that gym because there were athletes in different fields and I really liked it. I really enjoyed watching them. There was a big playground by the Sokolovna and we used to get together from the surrounding houses on the playground and play there. The volleyball players used to gather on that court. Well, to put it this way, that’s probably what we liked the most. We always waited for them to start playing over the net and stop just warming up, and we would always borrow the ball from them. They were kind and always lent us the ball, and we tried to imitate them."
