  • "We usually went to the Czech consulate which was in Kiev. There was a Mr. Vágner who was interested in the history of the Volhynian Czechs. We talked to him. There was also the Czech ambassador, Mr. Šindel. We talked with them about the fact that since we lived near Lutsk, we could start a society in Rivne. There are a lot of Volhynian Czechs here and we have a monument of the Czech Republic."

Vasyl Vasylyuk was born in Rivne, Rivne Oblast in the former Soviet Union on 5 May 1962. After the collapse of the Soviet empire, he played professional football in the Czech Republic, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. Since 2011, he has been the vice-chairman of the Czech Beseda, a Czech compatriot association in Rivne. Outside of his association activities, he was an associate professor of educational sciences and taught at the Department of Theory and Methodology of Physical Education at Rivne State University of Humanities. At the time of filming (2013) he lived in Rivne, Ukraine.
