  • "It was in February 1971, when most schools already had a Socialist Youth Union, but not the grammar school. So they called us into the auditorium, but you can't read that anywhere, I couldn't find that anywhere. They called us into the auditorium, of course it's not in the chronicles either, the whole grammar school, this was in February 1971, now someone came there from the district, they had some secretary of the Union invited, what his name was, I don't know. And he was talking to us and of course he was saying how important it was and so on, and we were making a lot of noise, all the time, and now he said something and we were maybe laughing, and it kept irritating him more and more. Finally it ended up that he said: "Well, listen, if you think you've come here to skive, you haven't. Let those who are really interested in working in the Socialist Youth Union stay here." And six people stayed."

Jaroslav Vávra was born on 24 May 1955 in Semily. He grew up with his parents and grandmother in Lomnice nad Popelkou. His parents were employed in a manufacturing company Technolen, his father as a weaver. He finished the nine-year primary school in Lomnice nad Popelkou in 1970. In the same year he entered the grammar school in Semily. There he began to devote himself more to music. This period was heavily marked by normalization - a number of great professors had to leave, and a new order set in. After graduation, he was accepted to the Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové to study teaching at the first level of primary school. After successful graduation from the faculty and military basic service, he started teaching at the first grade of primary school in Benešov u Semily and here he decided to broaden his education - he was accepted for a distance study at the Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové in the field of Czech - civic education with a specialization in music education for 5th - 12th grade. After graduation in 1986, he started teaching at the 2nd grade of the primary school in Libštát. In 1996, he won the competition for the position of headmaster of the primary school in Semily. After ten years in Semily he taught at other primary schools. He finished his teaching career, again as a headmaster, at the primary school in Benešov u Semile. Throughout his life he was intensively devoted to children’s choral singing as a choirmaster and as an author. He was a town councillor in Semily for two terms. In 2014 he received the Semily Town Award for merit in culture and education. He and his wife raised four children. In 2023 he was living in Semily.
