  • "I mentioned that we had a cottage in Křivoklát, which is a short distance from the Lánská obora. And as my grandfather was a hunter and liked to walk in the woods, he would sometimes go into the Lány game preserve to look. You weren't allowed to go there because Fidel Castro and Nicolae Ceaușescu used to shoot there. And every now and then he would pick up a drop, a dropped antler, as the fallow deer and the deer drop them in the spring. And he used to take me there sometimes. The best day of the year to go there was May Day, because everybody was in the parade and waving. So I showed up at the lineup in Brno, went to Prague and then to Lány. And I went with my grandfather to the Lány game preserve to collect the droppings left by these animals. The game-preserve there was very overexamined. That was such a special experience."

  • "So nowadays I go to Africa two or three times a year, but it's actually not that much fun from the traveller's point of view, because sometimes I only go there for three days. I used to go once every year and a half, but I was there for three months. Now the last trip, quite unplanned, to Rwanda, that was the forty-eighth. And all in all, when I added it up, I spent two years and one hundred and fifty days there. Next week I'm supposed to fly to Egypt to see the site of Professor Bárta, so that will be the forty-ninth. And in the summer I will celebrate, because I wanted to walk in Africa too, and not just drive in a car. So last year, we were able to visit the Ruwenzori Mountains in Uganda and we hiked somewhere in the mountains somewhere three or four thousand meters high. And this year in Tanzania I want to walk from the Ngorongoro Crater to Lake Natron, which is a couple of dozen kilometres and it's not mountains, so it's going to be much hotter there. But we're really looking forward to it. Plus it will be the 50th trip to Africa."

  • "It was a fountain of wisdom. Jiří Winter, alias Neprakta, was an extremely well educated gentleman and people knew him mainly as a cartoonist, but I enjoyed talking to him about history, nature and finally about the bones. He gave me my first human skull. He taught me the differences between a male and a female skull, and because of those things and that knowledge here, I then had a little bit of a head start, as I said, in that freshman year of veterinary school. When I was behind in those other subjects, the anatomy, initially it was just bones, so I was a little ahead there."
