  • "It was not an easy decision. But then I thought... I didn't know what I was getting into. Not at all. I just... I made up my mind one day, took all the money out of the bank and put it in a book on the bookshelf. I put it on the bookshelf."

  • "I was in Italy and I thought, I have rich relatives in Germany, so I'm going to Germany, and I bought a ticket to Munich. At the Brenner Pass they found out I didn't have a German visa. They wanted me to buy a transit visa for Austria, and found out I didn't have an Italian visa. So they took me to Bolzano and put me in jail again. It was the same circus: 'You must leave, you'll be deported, you'll go back to Czechia'. I said, 'Asilo politico.' The cop started laughing. I don't understand Italian but I gathered he was going home for lunch, a siesta, and when he came back he would do all the paperwork and send me to the camp. They put me back in the cell but didn't lock the door. They showed me where the bathroom was so I could take a shower and wash. I must have stunk; I hadn't washed in a week. They told me not to go anywhere; I'd just get lost and only get in more trouble. The door was open; he showed me, it was open like this. I went to the bathroom and took a shower."

Ladislav Tabery was born on 13 September 1948 as the eldest of three sons. His mother Miluše Taberyová worked with Spoje in České Budějovice and his father Stanislav Tabery worked as a turner. Ladislav Tabery spent almost his entire childhood in the workshop where his father built racing motorcycles and was constantly inventing various technical improvements. He took after his father’s technical and manual skills. In 1963, he entered the communications school in Tábor and graduated in 1969. He worked at Závody průmyslové automatizace (ZPA) from 1974 to 1983, spending most of this time away from home on remote sites. After the death of his father in 1985, he decided to leave Czechoslovakia and seek his fortune elsewhere. He emigrated via Yugoslavia, crossing the state border in Nova Gorica. He spent a year in various internment camps in Italy, waiting for his emigrant visa to be processed. In 1986, he flew to the USA where he lived until 2021. He describes difficult beginnings in the USA, where he worked at the lowest positions, learning English. His technical talent allowed him to work his way up quite quickly in the USA. He has been coming to the Czech Republic regularly since 1990. At the time of filming (2023) he lived in České Budějovice.
